How to use iMovie to edit movies

To add music to you movie, just find the song you wanna use by clicking , you can even search your song title to make it easy to find what you are looking for. When you find it, just drag it to your project window and drop it in the gray area, the music shows up as a green area behind the project window.

To add sound effect, open the and go to sound effect browser, you can see there are hundreds of sound effects of iLife, select a sound effect and press space bar to preview.

And drag the clip over specific video clip until you find the frame which you want the sound to begin play, and release the mouse. A green mark will appear indicating the location of the sound effect.


Tip: To adjust the volume of the sound effect, click once on green to select it, then click “adjust audio” button, and then you can adjust the sound volume and set sound fade in and fade out.

4. How to split and crop movie clips in iMovie

Drag a clip or clips from the viewing pane to the editing region below and select a clip by clicking on it.

To Split a Clip: Place the cursor beneath the viewing window at the place in the movie where you want to split the clip into two. And right click mouse to choose “Split Clip”.

To Crop a Clip: If you only want to separate a piece of video in the middle of a clip from the rest of the scene, use the markers underneath the playhead. Drag these markers to highlight the portion of video that you want to isolate. The selected portion will be marked in yellow.

If you want to use only this selected portion, click Edit > Crop, or use the keyboard shortcut Apple + K. This will keep the portion of the clip highlighted in yellow, and delete the rest.

5. How to add title of movie by iMovie

Add titles to the project by pressing the Titles button (the ‘T’ button below the Viewer). Select a Title style from the list below and drop it onto the relevant clip in the Project Window. The Title is positioned at the beginning, entire clip or end of the clip dependent upon where the blue overlay is placed.

Now, in the Viewer, double click the text and enter the new Title text. To choose a different font, click ‘Show Fonts’ (top left in the Viewer) to open the OSX fonts menu.

6. How to export the project

Select the devices you want to create a file for and click Publish. To Export to YouTube, choose Share > YouTube… and enter your account details, sign in and then Publish. Finally, to export to a QuickTime movie, choose Share > Export using QuickTime…, select a destination and setting from the drop down (e.g. ‘Movie to QuickTime Movie’) and click Save. To export the project for playback on iTunes compatible devices (iPod, iPhone etc), just select Share > iTunes from the menu.
