After connecting the device to your Mac, then all media files in your device, your iTunes and your Mac will be displayed on the main interface and sorted clearly in catalogues, such as Alblums,Artists,Genres, Composers, etc.
Files in your portable devices are listed on the left, while those in your iTunes, your local files, or your DVD files are listed on the right of the interface.

Note: Here you can choose the "Hide Duplicate Contents" to make your browse and transfer more efficiently.

Tips:
If you want to transfer media files like videos, photos, or DVD movies for playback on your iPod/iPhone/iPad, you can click More Contents under the Music, which allows you to transfer those files within 20 files.
